Don’t ring me - fring me!

I am absolutely excited about the possibilities that fring - a new exciting startup can bring to the mobile industry. VoIP until now has been a PC based bastion apart from the call forwarding services which are not really mobile based VoIP services.

Skype Mobile has been an application I have been using for well over a year now and suffice it to say that Skype is an awesome product and its inherent benefits are highlighted when you use it on a smartphone with a 3G connection. However, skype has not yet gone mainstream and support is still limited to phones in the top end of the market (arm processor based phones with serious OS’es).

Fring eases this pain and aims to take VoIP based messaging services like skype, googletalk, yahoo and msn completely mainstream. The direct to mobile and landline dial-up feature is also absolutely usable and is completely free right now! Right off the bat the support for Nokia phones running Symbian is really good which enables a whole segment of the mobile market to take advantage of VoIP services and probably will lead to carriers making all you can eat plans cheaper in the long run (hopefully…).

We really need more applications like fring to show carriers that making data plans cheaper and more accessible to millions of users will eventually lead to greater ARPU for carriers.
