I would totally disagree with Stefan with regards to SMS usability. The usability of the SMS application is the reason why people can almost instantly use it when they buy a new device. The application is simple in concept and relates well to the mobile device. iOTA Sphere has designed its On-Device Services solution around the usability of SMS as it is the only enduring application. Winning users with new applications is all good, however most applications fail to retain users and drive further usage.

After a long holiday break, the Carnival of the Mobilists is back. I'm honored to host it here at Wap Review with a great selection of posts from all areas of the mobile scene.

I think there is another important aspect in SMS which is essential to its success. I would call it "user created value". I hope that a small example makes this clear. I tell my girlfriend that an SMS with a single dot means "I think of you". So whenever I send her a message with a dot, she knows that I think of her. The value which we created by this technique is much greater than plain communication of information. Its an emotinal as well as a private thing. To everyone else, its just a message with a dot. But for us, I would mean a lot more.
So whats the point here? SMS allows users to create value by assigning a particular meaning to messages that goes beyond mere information. Thats probably another reason why SMS is so universal and succeeded despite its horrible usability.
